Nigeria In Trouble As Production Of Petrol-Powered Cars May End In 2025

UK To Ban Sale Of All Diesel And Petrol Cars From 2040
As part of strategy to improve air quality, the Government of the United Kingdom is set to announce a ban to all new petrol and diesel cars and vans in the country from 2040 amid fears that rising levels of nitrogen oxide pose a major risk to public health. The government is due to publish a court-mandated clean air strategy on Wednesday, July 26, while ministers are to unveil a £255m fund to help councils introduce steps to deal with pollution from diesel vehicles as part of £3bn spending on air quality.
BMW has also announced plans for an electric Mini to be constructed, while Volvo has also progressed towards building cleaner cars.
The High Court had ordered the Government to produce plans to tackle air pollution by July 31.
The announcement follows similar plans laid out in France.
A government spokesman said: ‘Poor air quality is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK and this government is determined to take strong action in the shortest time possible.
‘That is why we are providing councils with new funding to accelerate development of local plans, as part of an ambitious £3 billion programme to clean up dirty air around our roads.
‘Our plan to deal with dirty diesels will help councils clean up emissions hotspots – often a single road – through common sense measures which do not unfairly penalise ordinary working people.
‘Diesel drivers are not to blame and, to help them switch to cleaner vehicles, the Government will consult on a targeted scrappage scheme, one of a number of measures to support motorists affected by local plans.’
